History of Almería Airport

Even though Almería's Town Hall began constructing a municipal aerodrome in the late 1920's, due to aeronautical activities beginning to take place in the city back in 1911, which was inaugurated in 1932, the first real initiative to provide the city with an airport would not take place until 1947 as there was a need to break the city's secular isolation as well as for the exporting of agricultural produce.

It took until 1968 for plans to be approved and the airport to be built and it was inaugurated on February 6th that year. The location is in the area now known as El Alquián.

Air traffic first began with an Almería-Madrid route at the frequency of 2-3 flights per week, but by April the frequency was up to daily flights. In November flights to Murcia and Barcelona were established and later on flights to Alicante and Barcelona were added.

In July of 1970 the airport inaugurated the first international route with the Almería-Valencia-Paris flights, operating on Sundays, and it was followed by routes to Germany and to England. An Almería-London route, operated by British Airways, began in 1974, and the first charter operations took place that summer.

The passenger terminal at Almería Airport was remodelled in 1995. The airport also has a cargo terminal that opened in 2002.

About Almería, Andalusia, Spain

Almería was founded in 995 as the humble trading port of Pechina and was known as Al-Mariyya Bajjana by Abd-ar-Rahman III and it has undergone many various rulers, and earthquakes, that shaped the city's history, business and nature since.

The city and the Almería province sits in the south-east area of Spain, and it's one of eight provinces in the region known as Andalusia which takes up the southern part of Spain. Andalusia's capital city is Seville, and it also includes Costa del Sol (the Malaga province), and the Sierra Nevada mountains (Granada province) which are other popular tourist locations in the region.

Almería city had a population of 196,851 in 2018, while the province had a population of 701,688 in 2014.

Because of the city's vast history there are plenty of historic sites to explore when visiting Almería, including the Alcazaba, the second largest medieval Muslim fortresses in Andalusia (the Alhambra in Granada being the largest and most famous one), and the Almería Air Raid Shelters which is an underground gallery for civilian protection established during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

Another site worth visiting is the Cathedral, which was built as a mosque, later turned into a Christian church, with its fortress-like appearance due to the towers built to protect it from Mediterranean pirates. It was, just like the Alcazaba, destroyed in an earthquake in 1522, but it was rebuilt during the 16th century in a Renaissance style keeping some of its original features.

The Museum of Almería includes mostly findings from the Alcazaba that dates back to prehistoric, Iberic, Roman, Greek and Muslim ages.

The area surrounding the city includes Europe's driest area which is part of the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, which also includes coves and caves only reachable from the sea. The area's nature include the Taberna Desert where famous western movies such as The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, For a Few Dollars More, and a Fistful of Dollars were shot, as well as parts of movies like Patton, Lawrence of Arabia, the 1982 Conan the Barbarian, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The city offers a wide variety of bars, cafés, tapas bars, and restaurants, night clubs and more. There is also a main shopping street, and a harbor, and of course a beach, with plenty of other beaches in the province.
